Fès – November, 14

Fès is a fascinating city, one of Morocco's four 'imperial cities'. It has a huge Medina (the old, walled town) dating from the Middle Ages: it's an incredibly tortuous maze of lanes, alleys and tiny streets in which finding one's way is virtually impossible.

Fortunately, we hired a very good guide, the marvelous Abdul, who took us around for a tour into the mystery of this town. Here he is, in his 'official' jallabia.

The following are two pictures from the courtyard of Bou Inania Medersa, built in the 14th century.

We visited the famous tanneries – arguably the oldest tanneries in operation – dating back from the 11th century. Fantastic leather, awful smell, a hell of a job for 130 families.

Some photos from the beautiful tiny streets of Fès.

And, finally, the magnificent Attarine Medersa.
