Saint-Louis is the ‘capital’ of Northern Senegal. It was the first French settlement in Africa (1659) and conserves a very strong mark of the French colonial presence, both in its architecture and in its métis (mixed-race) population.
It is a nice, slow-paced and a little bit dilapidated place to spend an afternoon in a bar, sipping a goyave juice and thinking about the 'splendour' and horror of European colonialism.
We stayed at a campement on the Langue de Barbarie, a beautiful, narrow and long peninsula between the Senegal river lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean.
Very relaxing!
